A 40-year-old who fell asleep at the wheel of his car after gambling for 15 hours at the Resorts World Sentosa casino was yesterday fined S$7,500 in a district court for causing the death of an elderly pedestrian.
David Chang, who was banned from driving for 42 months, was fined a further S$4,000 for causing grievous injury to the pedestrian's wife.
On Jan 22, Chang was driving along Telok Blangah Road towards Pasir Panjang around noon when his car ran into the elderly couple.
The credit officer had closed his eyes for three seconds while driving because of fatigue. When he dozed off at the wheel, Chang's car veered to the left of the road and into the bus bay. The collision killed Mr Yeo Ah Bah, 73, and seriously injured Madam Ler Sock Hua, 70, who were standing at the bus stop, waiting to cross the road.
