Indonesia declines Singapore help to tackle haze

The Indonesian government has declined help from Singapore on tackling the haze situation and said it was capable of resolving the matter on its own.

Mr Arif Yuwono, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Degradation Control and Climate Change, told Jakarta Globe that the situation was under control despite heavy haze continuing to blanket parts of western Indonesia.

On Tuesday, Singapore's Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said the Republic was ready to assist Indonesia to cope with the forest fires and haze, which threaten to cast a pall over the island's Formula 1 night race next week.

"We don't need any help (from foreign countries) because we already have our own standard procedures for handling disasters. The forest fires are now being handled by the BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency) through rain-making operations," Mr Arif said.
