He was found out only when police raided his flat at Bukit Batok Street 21 for illegal 4-D bookmaking on March 11 last year.

Yesterday, Tan was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail and fined $4,000 for criminal breach of trust, and for buying illegal 4-D lottery. LINK

Indonesia open to Singapore's offer to help put out forest fires

"It must be recalled that we've not had a similar case for more than 3 or 4 years. The last time there was a serious case was sometime around 2006 or 2007. In other words the efforts the Indonesian government had undertaken during the course of that period had actually worked not only nationally but also through collaborations with our partners as well as in the region.

Now that the fact that the haze has returned at this time we hope it should be taken in the context of the several years of successes in the recent past and we must ensure that the successes or the avoidance of such situation becomes the norm and the situation we have now has become the exception to the rule,"
Indonesia's Foreign Minister Dr Marty Natalegawa said.

He is open to Singapore's offer to assist in overcoming the forest fires in Indonesia.

Man U stars set for life without Rooney

MANCHESTER United stars have reacted to Wayne Rooney's shock revelation that he wants to leave Old Trafford by insisting they can cope without the England striker.

Rooney's team-mates were happy to have their say about his attack on United's lack of ambition after their 1-0 win over Bursaspor in the Champions League on Wednesday. And United left-back Patrice Evra had no qualms about telling Rooney to leave if he isn't enjoying life at Old Trafford.

'If one player in the team doesn't trust the others he should not play in the team,' Evra told the London Evening Standard. 'Me, I'm not in that point. I trust everyone and I know we can win. It's true no one wants to lose Wayne Rooney, he is one of our best players. But I'm not Wayne, I'm not Manchester United or Sir Alex Ferguson. I can't answer for him.

'I think the target here is to win back the title and we're focused on that. I've been here four years and when we didn't win the league last year I was so upset because at United you need to win every time; that's the pressure we have. If a player is not happy with that pressure he should go.' LINK

Canadian colonel gets life in prison for murders, rapes

BELLEVILLE, Canada: A Canadian court on Thursday sentenced Colonel Russell Williams to two consecutive life sentences for a spree of murders, sexual assaults and burglaries of women's homes.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Scott described Williams as a "sick and dangerous man" in handing down the strongest sentence available under Canadian law.

Williams will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.

Police arrested Williams in February for the disappearance and death of a 27-year-old woman, last heard from the previous month.

He was later charged with the November 2009 murder of a female corporal under his command at the Trenton military base, as well as in two home invasions in which women were confined and sexually assaulted, and an additional 82 counts of break-and-enter and attempted break-and-enter in Ottawa, Belleville and Tweed.

A stash of women's undergarments taken by police from Williams' Ottawa residence was linked to the burglaries near his home and job.

Police also seized hundreds of photographs and videos of the sexual assaults and murders from his home computer.

At sentencing, Williams sobbed as he apologised for the pain and suffering he caused, for "violating people's intimate privacy" and betraying his family, friends and military colleagues.

"Your Honour, I stand before you ashamed of the crimes I've committed," he said. "I deeply regret what I've done, and the harm I've caused with these despicable crimes." LINK
